Lockeed Martin anunció que el 29 de julio el prototipo del HC-130J realizó su primer vuelo.
La aeronave está basada en el C-130J Clásico pero configurado para misiones de rescate en zonas de geografía montañosa accidentada (riscos).
El prototipo incorpora una extensa lista de modificaciones respecto al modelo C-130J original,como un radar de búsqueda aire superficie de 360º de barrido,sistema direccional de señales S.O.S (socorro),sensores de imágenes electro-ópticos/infrarojo montados en su nariz,sistema embarcado de identificación automática,nueva suite de comunicaciones,tanques extra de combustible,lanzadores flare y equipo generador de humo
Lockeed informó que la aeronave será entregada en septiembre al comando de combate aéreo de la USAF,quién inicirá un proceso de habilitación y validación operacional.Hay dos ejemplares pedidos,no obstante eso,está prevista la adquisición de 18 ejemplares del HC-130.

The HC-130J is a modern personnel recovery aircraft delivering increased versatility and operational capability to the warfighter with its more powerful engines and HC-130J-unique features.
